Troop 110 is transitioning our fundraising to activities that are educational, sustainable and community-based. As part of that effort, in 2017 we undertook two local, sustainable agriculture projects – one for community service, one for fundraising: First, we volunteered to tend the Lynnhurst Park courtyard garden, where we grew a wide range of vegetables, which were donated to local food shelves. Second, we tended two beehives, which provided pollinators to our neighborhood (including the Lynnhurst garden!), while giving educational opportunities, including the harvest of the honey and processing of the wax.
The bees are now resting away for the winter, with about 70 pounds of honey per hive to hold them over until spring. While the bees are resting we’re selling the excess honey, which will be used to fund troop activities, including an epic trip for 23 scouts and parents to hike the Inca Trail in Peru in July, 2017.
